Some signs and symptoms can vary dramatically. It could be something as simple as a little bit of extra clear tearing coming from one or both eyes. You could have colored discharge from the eyes as well. Yellow, green, or white discharge could be evidence of an infection. If you see squinting or pawing at the eyes, those could be evidence too. Redness of the eye can indicate that there's something going on. A lot of you have heard about a cherry eye in dogs, which is a prolapsed third eyelid. Dogs can also get an ulcer on their eye, which is a scratch. So those are all things that can cause them problems and be indications of it.

It's important to avoid self-diagnosing dog eye issues because there are so many things that can cause eye issues in dogs. If we don't get the proper course of treatment early, a lot of these conditions can worsen.
How will a veterinarian diagnose a problem with vision or other eye issues in my dog?
A veterinarian will diagnose vision issues by doing a couple of different tests. We can do what's called a menace reflex, where we check to see if they blink. We can have them track certain objects. If diagnosing any sort of infection, we can take swabs. We can stain the eye to see if there's an ulcer, and we also have a little magnifying glass to look in that eye as well.

It's always recommended that if you're going to treat your dog's eye infection at home, you do it under the care of a veterinarian. We always recommend that you bring them into a vet to get a diagnosis, and then if there are going to be treatments at home, it's under the direction of a vet.

It can, but it depends. Some eye infections will go away, some eye infections will get worse. There are even some situations where if an eye infection originates in one eye, if they swipe their face funny, they can transfer the infection from one eye to another. So, short answer: sometimes.

You can give your dog's eye drops, but it depends on which ones. If you're ever going to give your dog's eye drops, make sure that you speak with your veterinarian first to see if they're approved for dogs.

There are vision tests for dogs. Now, it's not going to be something you're thinking of if you go to an ophthalmologist and they're looking at your eyes. However, we do have tests where we can check for reflexes for vision. We can also do some light reflexes as well to check to see if an animal is visual. Yes.

Dog blindness can be caused by all sorts of things. It can be acute trauma. It could be an infection that has caused blindness. It could be a cataract. Cataracts happen in dogs and cataracts can cause blindness. It could also be something more sinister like a neurological disease. So, there are lots of different things that can cause blindness in dogs.
What should I do if I notice my dog is losing their sight?
If you have concerns that your dog is losing its vision, we always recommend seeking a veterinarian's care. There are lots of different things, as I said, that can cause it, and we just want to make sure that if it is something that we can treat, we do it as soon as possible.
Can regular cleaning of my dog's eyes prevent eye issues?
It can help prevent debris accumulation in there. If you're going to clean the dog's eyes, remember to just use a warm washcloth and gently clean them. It's not always going to prevent infections, though.
